When the foot is placed in it anatomical neutral position, the talocalcaneal (subtalar) articular surfaces are parallel (congruous) to one another.  The subtalar joint space can be palpated one finger breath inferior and anterior to the medial ankle bone (see animated model left, circle).   When the subtalar joint is supinated, the subtalar joint space feels cavernous.  When the subtalar joint is pronated, the subtalar joint space feels collapsed.  When the subtalar joint is in its neutral position, the subtalar joint space feels congruous.
